If we desire respect for the law – we must make the law respectable. ..

The above quote is most relevant to the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2014 which were implemented in Ireland on Saturday, March 1st, 2014.  In my humble opinion, these laws are the most disrespectable laws ever to befall the citizens of this country…

The S.I. 9 deny the right of a family to build their own home – they even deny a family the right manage the build of their own home.

The S.I. 9 deny the right of the Tradesman to have a fair & equal chance at employment – he must be under a Building Contractor’s ‘wing’ to have any hope of work.

The S.I. 9 deny the right of the rural community of population – of young, vibrant families living among them – showing hope of a brighter future.

The S.I. 9 deny the right of many, many, competent & qualified, architects, draughtsmen, architectural technologists and civil engineers of employment in the planning and construction of new dwellings & extensions.

The S. I. 9 deny the right of Registered RIAI Architects to be free to be who they were meant to be – talented, intelligent ‘Master Builders’ – they have now been morphed into full time Building Inspectors with the weight of each build on their shoulders for the rest of their lives.

The S.I. 9 deny the right of every citizen in Ireland of an Independent Building Inspectorate to guarantee every single build thus ensuring consumer safety – after the disastrous building control history we have the very least this Government could have done was ensure that Builders & Developers never, ever go unregulated again – they have missed a great opportunity to change the face of building control in Ireland.

Priory Hall – that awful symbol of ‘Ireland’s property madness’ – is just the tip of the iceberg of the scandalous unregulated construction sector here in Ireland.  As time goes on, and as the years slip away, I have no doubt that we will see many, many ‘Priory Halls’ – this saddens me to even think that way but I would have some degree of comfort if I was assured that at least now the ‘cowboys’ are regulated – unfortunately the S.I. 9 means that the ‘young guns’ are free to ride up and down the country safe in the knowledge that there will never be a ‘Wyatt Earp’ coming through the gate to check on them.

I am certain that the Builders and Developers in the Construction Industry Federation will be the only citizens who will respect the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2014 – as they are the only citizens who have been shown respect by these particular laws.
